Database challenges for SREs

Site reliability engineering (SRE) is the practice of using software tools to automate IT infrastructure tasks such as system management and application monitoring. In some organisations, the responsibility may lie with the Database Administrator (DBA) but in many cases it could be the SRE team that need to make sure the database and SQL statements are running optimally. With the shift to the Cloud, it is becoming more common for other roles such as SRE to perform DBA-like tasks such as performance tuning because in some cases there is no DBA any longer. In mid to large organisations, there is more likely to be a DBA but often the relationship between DBA and SRE can be tricky. Having clearly defined responsibilities for each role and sharing a common monitoring tool can hugely aid in the communication of database performance issues.
